Each substrate (media) used for digital printing has its own particular surface and internal structure, based on the type of material it is made of. The materials can in fact be of various types and characteristics: opaque, transparent, specular, translucent; smooth, embossed, textured, glossy, matte, etc.
The optical phenomena on the illuminated surfaces are of various types: reflection, transmission, specularity, diffraction, refraction, diffusion, absorption, dispersion.
A spectrophotometer must therefore have an optical geometry suitable for adequately capturing the light signal returned by the substrate during the color measurement phase. Most spectrophotometers on the market have been tested for reading opaque and planar-surfaced materials such as photographic papers.
