Rendering intents
An ICC profile describes the device color capabilities (gamut).
Below you can find a comparison between two typical color gamuts as used in the photographic industry.

Red line: sRGB
The "sRGB" color space is the default color space in Photoshop 6 or 7 and used therefore when RGB images are edited without assigning any specific profile.

Blue line: Durst Lambda on photographic paper
The Durst Lambda color space is a typical representation of the color space of a laser imaging output device for photographic paper.

With color management, images can be automatically converted from one color gamut (source) to another (destination).
When converting, you have the choice between different methods (intents) where the main methods are:
- colorimetric
- Perceptual (photographic)

The colorimetric intent will convert the color exactly as it is defined in the source color space. Colors which are not printable are printed with the best possible match. This intent is normally used for logo colors (spot colors).

The perceptual intent will perceptually transfer the colors from the source color space to the destination. Colors will not be converted in an exact way, but the entire image will preserve their characteristic as good as possible (gamut compression). This intent is normally used for images.
